DQ USA, is the Biggest chain of soft-serve ice cream & fast-food in the name of International Dairy Queen Inc.

The first restaurant open in Joliet, Illinois on 22nd June 1940. It served a variety of frozen products, like soft-serve ice cream. Its corporate offices are located in the Minneapolis suburb of Edina, Minnesota.

The Dairy Queen restaurants have more than 6,600 franchises in the United States and Canada, with include 2,200 franchises are other countries. It has seen steady growth in the number of total franchises over the past eight years, with over 300 sites mare added in the past three years.

Restaurant History

The founders of the DQ® restaurant introduced a unique kind of dessert treat and the process to develop the foundation of the franchising system. 

A Sweet Success story is more than 80 years. It has been the combination of hardworking people who own and operate restaurants, and great-tasting food and tempting treats served in our establishments.

The restaurant remarkable story starts from the 10-cent sale of a then unnamed product on 4th August 1938, in Kankakee, Illinois. Father & son has been experimenting with a soft frozen dairy product for some-time.

They have become a partner with Sherb Noble has a good friend. Highlights of the DQ® system include:

  • 1940: First store creates in Joliet, Illinois.
  • 1949: malts & shakes are introduced.
  • 1951: Banana splits introduce.
  • 1953: Canadain first store opens.
  • 1955: The Dilly® Bar appearances.
  • 1965: DQ® restaurants message 169 million times a week on national radio.
  • 1972: Start business in Japan.
  • 1980: “We Treat You Right®” tagline introduced.
  • 1991: Start business in Mexico.
  • 1995: DQ® Chicken Strip Basket and Treatzza Pizza® make their appearance.
  • 2003: The Blizzard® of the Month show kicks off.
  • 2006: Change the Logo design.

DQ Stores

The DQ® stores having several substitute brands, all were displaying the unique DQ logo along with the trademark. During the 1970s, most restaurants were “Brazier” locations with the upper floor for storage, recognizable for their red mansard roofs. At the end of 2014, DQ restaurants had over 6,400 stores in 27 countries, including 1,400 locations outside the United States & Canada. The largest store is in the Bloomington, Illinois, United States. The largest store in the world in the Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the busiest store in the world is in the Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.

Some stores serve an abbreviated menu; some of open spring and summer, the majority of restaurants are open all year and serve hot food.

DQ® full Brazier restaurants serve a standard fast-food menu featuring french fries, burgers, and a crispy chicken and grilled in addition to frozen treats and hot dogs.

It is known as the “Treat Center” concept, an improved version of the original stores also serving foods and drinks from the Orange Julius menu. It has preferred a new idea for small-scale places, regularly in shopping mall food courts. Some early Treat Centers also included Karmelkorn.

Brazier is originated in 1957 when one of the franchisees, Jim Cruikshank, set out to improve the regulated food system. When he testified flames were growing from an open charcoal grill in a New York eatery, he understood he had found the Brazier concept.

Still, the company website considers their hot dog and burger lines as “Brazier Foods,” according to the history part & some FAQ listed topics.

Its location features treats, hot food, and self-serve soft drinks. It is a unique idea for renovated full-service restaurants. These stores are older-style and feature a new store design. In most cases, they give an expanded menu, including Grill Burgers, breakfast, and grilled sandwiches. They also include self-serve soft drink fountains allowing free refills. However, there are still more former stores that have not improved to a new style.

DQ Texas Country Foods

Most of the locations are in Texas; those include similar with the Brazier, DQ® Grill & Chill formats use a separate hot food menu in-country Foods. Among other differences, “Hunger-Buster” burgers are accessible in place of the Brazier and Grill Burger offerings.
